Materials You May Need
- Metal water pot
- Akshatas (mixing uncooked plain white rice grains with turmeric powder and a drop of ghee)
- Black sesame seeds
- Darbhas or kushas (sacred grass) to hold three of them in your right palm, while holding and leaving water
- Pavitram (a ring made of darbha is to be worn on the right hand ring finger during the ritual)
Tirtha Ahoban
ওঁ কুরুক্ষেত্রং গয়া-গঙ্গা-প্রভাস-পুষ্করাণি চ।
পুণ্যান্যেতানি তীর্থানি তর্পণ-কালে ভবন্ত্বিহ।।

Deva Tarpana
The first to be performed is Deva Tarpana – satiation of various gods who run this universe. They are cosmically present in us as various good qualities.
- Sit facing the east direction.
- The right knee should be in contact with the ground, while the left knee should be out of contact with the ground (i.e. place the left leg over right leg so that left knee is a little above the ground).
- Place the water pot in front of you.
- Put some akshatas in the water pot, hold the water pot on the right hand palm, cover it with the left hand palm and say the following to request the presence of gods and rishis in that water pot. It means “may gods and rishis, may all the great ones who live in the stomach of the cosmic egg of creation come here”.
ওঁ দেবাঃ তৃপ্যন্তাম।
Rishi Tarpana
You need to continue to sit facing east with the right knee in contact with earth. You need to use the water containing akshatas and do the same way as in Deva tarpana. Imagining that you are pleasing the seven sages (Saptarshis) who hold the universe together.
ওঁ সপ্তর্ষয়ঃ তৃপ্যন্তাম।
Divya Manushya Tarpana
Now offerings are made to various other sages and divine beings.
- Turn right and sit facing the Northwest direction (in the direction of the Air element), without touching either knee to the ground, i.e. with raised knees.
- If you are wearing the sacred thread, wear it like a necklace, around the neck. Change its position without removing it from the body.
- Chant following mantra for twice, and leave water from the area below the base of the little finger of the right hand (Karya Tirtha). If you have 3 darbhas in your hand, place them on the little finger, with the tips of darbhas aligned with the tip of little finger.

Pitri Tarpana
Pitri Tarpana is an offering to various deceased ancestors of various lives who have a strong karmic connection to us, either in this life or the ones before.
- Sit facing the south direction. If you are wearing the sacred thread, wear it now above the shoulder on the right and below the shoulder on the left, without removing it from the body.
- The left knee should be in contact with the ground, while the right knee should be above the ground and not touching it. (So sit with the left leg on the ground and the right leg on top of left leg.)
- Place the water pot in front of you; pour some black sesame seeds in the water pot; bow to it and imagine that ancestors are present and will accept your water oblations.
- Take some water, hold it in the right palm, say each mantra and release it sideways from the area below the base of the index finger (Pitri Tirtha). (If you have 3 darbhas in your hand, place them on the index finger, with the tips of darbhas aligned with the tip of the index finger. Water should be touching the base of darbhas as it leaves the palm.)
Yama Tarpana
ওঁ যম দেবায়-ধূমর্ণা দেবী নমঃ।।
যম দেব-ধূমর্ণা দেবী, তোমাদের আহবান করি; তর্পন গ্রহণ করো; তোমাদের সুস্থতা কামনা করি।
These are offerings to God Yama, who is the keeper of dharma and judge of people’s karmas.
এ্তৎ সতিলোদকং ওঁ যমায় নমঃ।
ঔঁ যমায় ধর্মরাজায় মৃত্যবে চান্তকায় চ।
বৈবস্বতায় কালায় সৰ্ব্বভূতক্ষয়ায় চ।
ঔডুম্বরায় দধ্নায় নীলায় পরিমেষ্ঠিনে।
বৃকোদরায় চিত্রায় চিত্রগুপ্তায় বৈ নমঃ।
যম দেব-ধূমর্ণা দেবী তোমাদের আহবান করি; তর্পন গ্রহণ করো; তোমাদের সুস্থতা কামনা করি।
